Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani
March 3, 2001
Alhamdulillah Allah has granted us to see one more year of the Hijri
cal. From the time Prophet (s) migrated to al-Madinah it has been
1423 years.
Alhamdulillah He sent him rahmatan lil-`alamaeen – Mercy to all the
worlds. When we say rahmah, it means mercy. If your health is good
that is a mercy; if your business is good that is a mercy; if your
life is good that is a mercy; if your children are raised well and
good that is a mercy. If your neighbors are good with you and
friendly that is a mercy from Allah swt. If Allah swt sent rain to
you that is a mercy. Whatever is good is a mercy.
And Allah described the Prophet (s) as mercy to all the worlds,
rahmatan lil-`alameen.
That means "Ya Muhammad! I made you to be merciful for all My
servants. Your presence in their lives is a mercy for them. You are
My servant and they are My servants. But you are my perfect servant.
Innaka la`ala khuluqin `adheem- `Indeed you are on a tremendous
character.' [68:4] So I made them, and if they follow you, you will
be a mercy for them."
If we follow the way of Sayyidina Muhammad (s), we will never see
difficulties, we will never see problems. If we are going to follow
our bad desires, we are going to find problems in our life. Try to
save yourself by following what the Prophet (s) brought.
O Muslims! This what changed the life of the universe - the
migration from Makkah to Madinah. That took place eight days ago;
some say ten days ago and some say eleven, that the Prophet (s)
arrived in al-Madinah.
This is the month in which Allah ordered the Prophet (s) to move to
Madinah to establish the infrastructure of Islam, to establish the
state, and the khilafah of Islam. It was in this month that Allah
gave a place to the Prophet (s) from which Islam spread everywhere.
Today's topic is the importance of the day of `Ashura, the tenth of
Muharram, that the Prophet (s) has mentioned.
When he reached al-Madinat al-munawwara - at that time it was called
Yathrib or Taiyba - and entered, and established his place he
found the Jews fasting the tenth of Muharram. And he asked, "Why are
they fasting on that day?" They said, "Because on that day Allah
saved Musa from Pharoah." And the Prophet (s) fasted that day and
ordered the Muslims to fast that day.
And Muslim narrated in one of the hadith of `Ashura, "`an abi
qatadata an rasulullahi saama yawma `Ashura… kaffaaratan lis saanat
almaadiya." Abu Qatada (r) reports that the Prophet (s) said that
whoever fasts that day, will be forgiven all the sins of the
previous year.
Imam Abu Hanifa said, Kaana waajiban fee awwali dhuhur al-Islam -
"that day was an obligatory fast in the beginning of Islam." Imam
Shafi`i said, "It is a Sunnah to fast it but not obligatory." Imam
Abu Hanifa says that it was an obligation to fast this day in the
first decade of Islam.
But it is important to remember that Allah swt will waive one year's
sins you have committed. This is a mercy that Allah sent to us, by
means of wa ma arsalnaaka illa rahmatan lil-`alameen - We sent thee
not, but as a Mercy for all creatures. [21:107] By following what
the Prophet (s) did, they are forgiven their sins.
Look, if you are in prison, if you keep good behavior, they might
release you early, parole. On the Day of Judgment we will be looking
for anything that can parole us, that can waive our sins. Do you
have the fast of `Ashura on that day?
So everything that the Prophet (s) brought is a mercy for Muslims.
It is one day, only one day, Sunday or Monday. If your intention is
to fast Monday with belief it is `Ashura, then fast it and you will
be rewarded on your intention.
Ibn `Abbas (r) the greatest mufassir of Qur'an, said that the
Prophet (s) fasted the day of `Ashura [because of its importance]
and he ordered the people to fast it. [Bukhari and Muslim] He
ordered the Sahaba to fast that day. That is its importance - to
waive one year's sins.
Abi Sa`eed al-Khudri (r) related that the Prophet (s) said, "Whoever
fasts the day of `Arafah Allah will waive the preceding year's sins
and the following year's sins."
That is more than `Ashura. That means he will be waived the sins of
the future, meaning he will be protected from sinning. And whoever
fasts `Ashura, Allah will forgive the preceding year's sins.
On that day, Allah gave honor to many prophets, upon whom be peace.
Allah has chosen Adam (as) to be father to human beings on that day.
He raised Idris (as) to heaven on that day. He saved Sayyidina Nuh
(as) with people in his ship on that day. He saved Sayyidina Ibrahim
(as) on that day. He forgave Sayyidina Dawud (as) on that day. He
returned Sulayman's (as) kingdom to him on that day. He swt relieved
Ayyub (as) [of his afflictions] on that day. He swt raised Sayyidina
`Isa (as) [to heaven] on that day. And on that day your messenger,
the Seal of messengers whom Allah has chosen, on that day, Allah
made Sayyidina Muhammad (s) to marry Sayyidata Khadijah (r) and He
made him to migrate to Madinah on that day. And He created heavens
and earth on that day and He created the Pen (al-Qalam) on that day.
And that was a Friday – not a Saturday or Sunday.
That is a very important day in Islamic calendar.
Now you go to some places and they tell you of the importance of
this day. But you go to other places involved too much in politics,
and they forgot about this day.
And in the end, I want to give the meaning of `Ashura. It is
mentioned in many Islamic traditions that `Ashura means the one who
respects and honors that day on which Allah saved all anbiya from
the abuse of their communities Allah will lift to a lightened life.
It means `asha nura - to live a 'lightened day.' They took the nun
out to connect the two words.
Al-Hamadani - one of the greatest muhaddiths - related that when
Allah swt ordered Nuh to build his ship, he built it from 124,000
planks. And we know in Islamic tradition in the tafsir of Ibn `Abbas
regarding Surat al-`Araf, that Allah sent 124,000 prophets, and
among them were 313 messengers. When Sayyidina Nuh (Noah) began to
put each plank in place, the names of the prophets appeared on them.
When he reached one before the last plank, number 123,999 the name
of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) appeared on plank 124,000. Then Nuh (as)
knew that he was the last Prophet (s). He then needed four more
planks to complete the ship. As soon as he put these, the names of
the four rightly-guided caliphs appeared on those planks. Allah swt
said to him, "For the sake of Muhammad I am saving the ship."
Thus Sayyidina al-Hamadani said, "For Allahs' love of them, He put
their names on that ship." Whoever loves the Prophet (s) and his
companions, Allah will love them.
May Allah give us the baraka to fast on `Ashura.
I would like to bring to your attention the verse: Ati`ullah wa
ati`ur-rasul, wa ulil amri minkum.- Obey Allah, obey the Prophet and
those in authority among you.[4:159]
It is a very difficult time. Muslims must be aware that they must
keep love of Islam in their homes, in their communities and with
their neighbors. Else we will be in danger. Allah protected Islam,
and no one can add or subtract anything from it. Muslims might be in
danger, and therefore they must take their precautions. We came here
not to make it an Islamic state. It is not like that. We came to
live peacefully, to work, to raise our children Islamically and to
raise a new generation. If we seek more than that and we will be in
problems.
The Prophet (s) said, "In Last Days chunks of darkness will come on
my Ummah. At that time the one sitting is better than the one who is
walking and the one who is walking is better than the one who is
riding..."
If you have a problem sit at home. If we involve ourselves we will
harm ourselves. Sit by yourself, read Qur'an and hadith and go to
your work. Don't involve yourself in anything these days - it is not
advisable. May Allah protect all who protect people from miseries
and disasters.

BE CAREFUL NOT TO BE LAZY!
Khutba Jumuah
Lefke, Cyprus: 11 January 2008
O Muslims, believers! This is a new year that Allah SWT has blessed us with it. 1429. This is a year that remind us how Prophet SAW migrated from Mecca to Madina with the company of Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq. This is a year where Sayyidina Ali was sleeping on the bed of Prophet SAW when the enemies, when Abu Jahal and his people came to kill Prophet SAW. He sacrifices himself. It remind us about sacrificing the self for the honor of Sayyidina Muhammad SAW and for the honor of Islam.
O Muslims, the enemy that is against us always that is looking for us at any moment we are heedless to attack us is our ego. And the one who is working with shaytan his ego will be strongest and that one who is working with Prophet SAW and with his teacher in order to be in the door at the door of Allah SWT in the Divine Presence is the one that is safe.
It is said in Arabic, man `alamanee harfan sirtu lahu `abdan - Who teach me one letter; I will become a slave for him. Imagine, Sahaba… they were sitting in the presence of Prophet SAW and they were learning from him all of them they became servant of Sayyidina Muhammad SAW. They become like stars as Prophet SAW said Ashabee kan-nujoom bi ayihim aqtadaytum ahtadaytum - My Sahaba, My Companions is like stars with anyone you take you will be guided. And inheritor of Sahaba are those day, those awliya Allah that Allah SWT put them under His Dome, where Prophet SAW said, from a holy hadith Awliyaee tahta qibaabee, la y`alamahum ghayree - My Saints are under My Dome, no one knows them except Me. Means Allah SWT has given every wali a dome that he is hiding himself behind that dome. And Prophet SAW said, in holy hadith man adhaa lee waliyan faqad adhantahu bil-harb - Whoever come against one of My awliya, I will declare war against him. How we come against a wali? How we attack a wali? Although the wali is giving us, is teaching us, is supporting us, how we allow ourselves to attack a wali is very easy, is by listening to our ego and not to listening to our shaykh. That is the problem.
Today, our problem is that our ego come first then the Shaykh come second. Our benefit come, advantage come first then the Shaykh come second. That's why the Prophet SAW has mentioned in a hadith that: Be careful not to be lazy. And they said: Ya Rasulallah, how we will be lazy? And he said: It's very simple to become lazy. And I will call the hadith, it's in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (narrated by Abu Hurayra RA) that Prophet SAW said..
When someone sleep, Shaytan comes quickly and make three ties, put three ties, three veils on that person immediately. When as soon as he go to sleep. That's why it is recommended to go to sleep on wudu, because shaytan will not come.
People…too many people today, they sleep without wudu. They sleep without two rakaat. All of us, we have this problem although our shuyukh teach us: don't sleep without wudu. So Prophet SAW said: shaytan come and put three ties on everyone, put it on your head, on the head of people and he say: O you have a long night, sleep, don't bother yourself. You waste your times till twelve o'clock, one o'clock in the morning looking on the TV, looking on things that it doesn't concern you, instead of sleeping early after Isha by one hour or two hours, go and sleep. Shaytan says: you have long night, don't worry about it. Because he doesn't want you to wake up for Fajr and what Prophet SAW said: As soon as you wake up and not listen to Shaytan, you wake up at night immediately mention Allah's name, say: ash-hadu an lā ilāha ill-Allāh wa ash-hadu anna Muħammadur rasūl Allāh or lā ilāha ill-Allāh Muħammadur rasūl Allāh or say Allah, or say whatever you want, make salawat on Prophet SAW. He said as soon as you wake up, open your eyes, immediately mention Allah's names, or Prophet's SAW names, or your Shaykh's names because Prophet SAW said: By mention name of pious people, saints, sincere people, Rahma will come. So mention any name, one of these ties immediately will be taken away, there will be left two ties.
If immediately that person wake up mention Allah's name, one tie will be lifted up, quickly he go to take wudu the second tie will be taken away, the second of the veils, second difficulties will be taken away. If he prays, all the ties will be taken away. He'll become strong, energetic after two rakaat wudu, all his veils will be taken away, all his difficulties will be taken away and he'll be able, he'll find energy in himself and his breath will become fresh that Allah likes, that angels like. They are coming to take his hasanat to the Divine Presence.
If he doesn't do that, what Prophet SAW said? If you don't do that, if you don't wake up, if you don't mention Allah's name, if you don't make wudu, if you don't pray, what happened to you? He will become the dirtiest ego person. His self become very dirty, lazy, not able to do anything during the day and that's why people come during the day and say: Oh—to Mawlana Shaykh, to our Shuyukh and say: Oh Mawlana, we have this problem; oh Mawlana we have this difficulties; oh Mawlana… Look what you have done at night. Did you wake up? Did you pray tahajjud? Did you pray salatun Najat? Did you pray Salatu Tasabih? Did you pray Fajr on time? No! So what will happen with us? We face problems during the day.
And I will quote another hadith; Sayyidina Abu Hurayra RA said that Prophet SAW said: the best time fasting after Ramadan is the month of Muharram which we are in it now. Prophet SAW recommended to fast these days. When he entered Madina, he saw the Jewish are fasting a day, the tenth of Muharram and he asked, "why the Jews are fasting that day?" and they said "because in that day Allah saved Sayyidina Musa AS from Firaun." He said: "We have more right for Sayyidina Musa AS than them," and that's why he fasted the tenth of Muharram and he said "if Allah SWT grant me to the second year, I will fast the ninth and the tenth," or in some ahadith they say the tenth and the eleventh.
And he said the best of prayer after the obligation prayer, the five prayers is the prayer at night when everyone is sleeping, when everyone listening to Shaytan and you are standing in the Divine Presence, listening to Allah SWT and praying for Him.
It is narrated that the Prophet SAW said afshoo as-salaam: O human being, O people! Say salaam to each other, don't keep hatred within the heart. If you see your enemy, you say salaam… no problem. If you see someone you're not speaking with him, you say salaam to him. It's an order! Prophet is ordering us: say salaam and give food and be generous. Don't make your table only for yourself and your wife and your children. Invite people; let your table be from East to West. So open, Allah will give more! Allah SWT like generous people and we are in a generous house. We have to pray for that house, we have to pray for that person who is on the top of that house; we have to pray may Allah give him long life, insha Allah.
And pray at night. Don't keep your night sleeping all night. Pray at night, when people are sleeping. You will enter Paradise peacefully and you will enter Paradise that Allah SWT happy with you and Prophet SAW happy with you and I will end with Ibn Mas'ud RA, what he said. And this is hadith also in Bukhari and Muslim that: They mentioned to the Prophet SAW that a person, a man, slept all the night until he didn't pray Fajr even. He wake up when the sun is up. What you expecting Prophet SAW going to say? What you are expecting Prophet going to say? This is very important! He said, "this is a person that Shaytan passed urine in his ears." Shaytan peed in his ears. "That person is dirty, his whole day is dirty!"
O Muslim, we must not make our day dirty. We must listen and we hope that Allah SWT give us the power to listen to our Shuyukh, to our teachers because as I said before, the one who teach me one letter, it is said in Arabic, I become a servant and a slave for that person. May Allah SWT keep us servant at the threshold of our Shaykh.

PROPHET SAW WAS GIVEN THREE KINDS OF KNOWLEDGES
Khutbat al-Jumu'ah
Burton, MI: 9 January 2009
O Muslim, believers! This is a month of Muharram al-haraam, it is a month that Allah swt prohibited in it, any kind of fighting. It is one of the months that prohibition of killing anything, even a worm, even an ant. Especially when you are in Mecca or Madina.
This is a month where Allah swt ordered His servants to make peace, because it is the beginning of the year, the year that Allah wanted for his believers and the year of hijrah, when the Prophet (s) migrated from Mecca to Madina. When he was tortured in Mecca and Allah ordered him to leave it behind him to go to Madinat al-munawwara and he will build his state and he will build the message of Islam that first flourished in Mecca and then flourished in Madina and then flourished all over the world.
In this month we don’t forget one of grandchildren of Sayyidina Muhammad (s) al-Husayn whose father is Sayyidina `Ali ibn Abi Talib and whose mother is Fatima az-Zahra and whose grandfather is Sayyidina Muhammad (s). And he came for support of the believers and what was the result? They killed him. And not only they killed him but they were cutting him into parts. That is why Allah swt is not happy with those who are killing others. And today we are seeing killing and bloodshed all over the world.
Mostly in every country around the world we see problem and these problems can be stopped by believing in Allah’s religion which is Islam which prohibits to attack anyone without a reason.
Sayyidina Muhammad (s) brought Islam as a message of peace; as a message of extending had to everyone; as a message to bring people to Paradise. Not a message to have bloodshed. Too many
kullu hizbin bim ladayhim farihoon - each party rejoices in that which is with itself. [23:53 and 30:32]
Every group is happy with what they have. Islam became groups. Instead of unity, it became groups. Instead of one hand it became hundreds and thousands of hands. Every group with different ideas, fighting each other and trying to eliminate each other.
In nay case we are not going into that subject. But we are asking Allah swt as many people around the world are doing to stop that bloodshed in the me to make sure that no one will be killed for no reason.
May Allah send his mercy on the hearts of the mothers and fathers and bro and sis and relatives of those who lost their loved ones.
As I said this is the month of temptations and we must try to do our best praying for those who passed away and sending them all kinds of prayers that Allah will forgive them and forgive us.
Sayyidina Muhammad (s) Allah gave him knowledge, as it is said in the hadith of the Prophet (s):
F`alam ukhidh `ala kitmaanahu idha `alam annahu la yaqdir `ala hamlhi ghayree. That when Allah asked him, wa sa’alanee rabbee wa lam astati` an ujeebah. Allah asked the Prophet (s) something and he was not able to answer. Allah asked something special. Then Allah put his hand between my two shoulder bi latakeefin wa la tahdeed. That means that Allah’s power has been put on the Prophet’s shoulders. Wa wajata bardaha. That means he felt something cool, contentment, peacefulness, “when that manifestation of Allah’s Hand was between my shoulder then Allah inherited to me the `uloom al-awaleen wal-akhireen.”
He didn’t say, "He gave me” or “He taught me knowledge of before and after.” He said, "inherited me.” When you inherit someone it means you are passing what you have, or what you want to give, to that one, to own it. It is not that you taught it. It is not something teaching, it is inheriting. I can teach you all the day about everything, but I cannot inherit you. If I inherit something then I don’t have it any more, it is no longer mine.
So He gave him to be his representative. To be calipha, khalifatullah `ala al-ard. To bring calipha on earth. That representation He didn’t give to anyone. He gave him `uloom al-awwaleen wal-akhireen. Who are awwaleen? It means knowledge of everything before that moment. It means the moment he inherited it, all the knowledge of what came before that moment. What was before? It means that from beginning of creation, he inherited that knowledge. And `uloom al-akhireen, is knowledge of what is after. It goes, up to eternal. As much as Allah wants him to know He gives him as servant of Allah. Be sure, not to mess it up. He is happy to be Allah’s perfect servant, he is happy to be `abd.
Allah owns everything. So every moment new knowledge is coming out and manifesting on the Prophet (s).
Then, he said, "thumma `alamanee `ulooman shatta - He taught me many different knowledges.” These knowledges that I am speaking about. The other no one knows. One he inherited to the Prophet (s) and one He taught him. The one He inherited, the Prophet (s) never discussed it. wa `alamanee `ulooman shatta. .. He divided that knowledge into three different groups. La yaqdiroo `ala hamlihi ghayree wa `ilmun khayaranee feehi The first of that group, category, He ordered me not to mention any from that knowledge - that is private only to me and no one can take that knowledge and that burden; it is between me and Allah.
wa `alamanee al-Qur'an. One knowledge He gave Sayyidina Muhammad (s) the choice you like to share you share, if you don’t like to share you don’t share. “And in that knowledge he taught me the Qur'an and Jibreel was always coming to me and reminding me of that knowledge.”
This is what Allah gave to the Prophet (s) to share it with anyone he likes. And the third knowledge that He ordered me to disseminate to share with everyone. That knowledge, the last one, is the knowledge of Shariah - what we have to do and how we have to live and how to discipline ourself and all this is in the third category. It is the third category that the Prophet (s) taught us in his hadith and the Prophet (s) taught to Sahaba.
Inna ad-deen `inda Allah al-Islam.
That knowledge has to continue to Judgment Day.
“And the knowledge that Allah told me, if I like I can share it and if I don’t like it I wont share it, huwa `ilm al-wilaya wa huwa `ilm al-haqaiq.” That second knowledge is the knowledge of the secrets of ash-Shariah. Not everyone can learn and understand it. It is a knowledge that depends how far you are progressing in your `ibadah that you will be able to learn these realities or not.
Haadhihi `uloom` ulooma haqa’iq ash-shariah wa haqaiqatuha asraruha al-makhzoona wal-maknoona alladhee asarahu an-Nabi (s) ila khawas ashaabi. That hidden knowledge was not given to anyone except to some private Sahaaba. Only a few Sahaaba took it, not every Ashaab knew it.
That is why Abu Hurayrah said, "two types of knowledge the Prophet (s) gave me. One I shared with the people, and the other if I share it, they will cut this neck.”[1]
O Muslims! There are knowledges that Allah swt gave to Prophet: the first is `ilm an-nubbuwat, the second is the knowledge that if he likes to share it he may and he may not if he doesn’t. That is what Abu Hurayrah confirmed and then the third is the `ilm ash-Shariah al-ghara al-mutahhara, that Allah wants everyone to follow the Shariah of Islam.
Today everything that we are seeing and learning and understanding all comes from `ilm ash-Shariah. The level above that if we. Look at Abu Hamid al-Ghazali - he revealed a small amount of this knowledge and he was thrown as a heretic at one time of his life. Many other sincere pious scholars of Islam brought out these knowledges – they have been killed.
O Muslims worship more and try to be sincere. Ask Allah to make you sincere. Ask Allah to give you more and Allah will send to your heart more knowledges that will make you be happy here and hereafter. I will not be too long this is enough. May Allah bless us.
